I am writing to express my serious concern about the influential religions such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism, which enhance discrimination against women.
Many countries have an obligation under Article 5(a) of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) “to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.” The influential religions have a great impact on negative gender stereotypes, as is evident from a lot of opposition against CEDAW by many religionists around the world.
I would therefore respectfully urge you to demand that the governments of nations which have ratified CEDAW prohibit the production, distribution and possession of holy writings such as the Bible, Sutra and the Koran etc. which normalize and promote discrimination against women.
